The Miami, Potawatomi, and other groups of indigenous people lived in what
is now the Chicago area prior to European exploration. The area came under
U.S. control in the early 1800s, and Chicago was founded in 1833. The
completion of a canal and a railroad line helped make Chicago a major
commercial hub. The Great Chicago Fire crippled the city in 1871, but
it was flourishing again in no time.
Today, more than 2.7 million people live in Chicago, and more than 9.5
million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Chicago is widely
known for its music, comedy, and thick-style pizza. It’s also home
of the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), which was the tallest building
in the world for almost 25 years.
